Listen to the story
Martis, the place of Mars, was a staging post on the road through the Cottian Alps above Susa. It lay at Oulx in Italy, where the Bardonecchia stream joins the Dora Riparia, almost twelve hundred metres up. A pilgrim's route from Bordeaux calls it a mansio, a stop with lodging, and it is engraved on one of the silver cups from Vicarello, which list the stations of the road to Rome. The Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus links it with a town destroyed in a Carthaginian war, perhaps by Hannibal.
