Iovis penninus id est Agubio

Gubbio

Listen to the story

Iovis Penninus, Jupiter of the Apennines, lord of sky and weather, was a mountain sanctuary famous for its oracle, and its ruins lie near Scheggia, not far from Gubbio in Umbria. The map draws a small temple standing on its own, with no road and no figure, and adds a note: 'that is, Gubbio'. Scholars read it either as naming the town itself or as a temple some miles away whose figure was lost. Gubbio had declined once the Via Flaminia passed it by, so the map shows only the temple, yet it was there, in 1444, that seven bronze tablets with Umbrian rites were found near the theatre.
