Fanomartis

Corseul

Listen to the story

Fanomartis runs together the Latin Fanum Martis, the shrine of Mars, the Roman god of war, and is generally identified with Corseul in Brittany. It was probably the chief town of the Coriosolites, a Gallic people, and its antiquities, along with an inscription bearing the people's name, support the match. On the map it is only a name on the road. A Roman register of routes also lists a Fanum Martis, but its route fits the map so poorly that another shrine of Mars, perhaps in Normandy, seems to be meant.
