Ad Veneris
östlich von Castellana [2]
Listen to the story
Ad Veneris, 'at Venus's', named a road station after a shrine of Venus, the goddess of love, probably east of Castellana in Apulia. The map fits it in with care: on a short stretch drawn almost vertically, the name is written sideways, eight Roman miles, about twelve kilometres, from each of its neighbours, Norba and Gnathia. A list of places compiled in Ravenna names it too, simply as Veneris.
