Ad Mercurium

Ksar Gurai (Hr. Kuschada, Algeria)

Listen to the story

Fourteen Roman miles beyond Ad Mercurium, the road reaches a station whose name can no longer be read. The stop itself is marked with a small house and lay eleven miles, about sixteen kilometres, from Theveste, now Tébessa in Algeria. It is usually placed at Ksar Gurai, though its exact spot remains uncertain. The name means 'at Mercury's', after the messenger of the gods, who also guided travellers on their way.
