Apollonos

Wadi Gemal (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Apollonos is Greek for 'of Apollo', short for Apollo's watering station, one of the guarded wells on the road across Egypt's Eastern Desert, at Wadi Gemal. The Roman writer Pliny names it, and so does an inscription probably from the time of Augustus or Tiberius. On the map it is only a name. Some scholars think the station guarded the emerald mines nearby; others point out that the workings and their workers' village lie some twenty kilometres away, too far for that.
