Ad Martis
(road station near Montecatini) (Barrington) · (bei Buggiamo) (Miller)
Listen to the story
Tombs, coins and remains of iron-working at Pescia in Tuscany may mark a village that grew up beside Ad Martis, a road station between Lucca and Pistoia. Like several other stops, it was named after a shrine of Mars, the old Italian guardian of fields and herds. The station itself probably stood near Uzzano, where a side road climbed the Pescia valley and crossed the stream on a Roman bridge into the village. On the map it is only a name, and its figure for the stretch to Pistoia, eight miles, may be a copying slip for twelve.
