Temple
Ad Dianam
el Fattih, Wadi Araba (Jordan)
Listen to the story
A small temple drawing marks Ad Dianam, a station at the crossing of two routes: one from Aila to Gaza, the other the Via Nova Traiana through Petra to Amman. It lay sixteen Roman miles from Aila on the Gulf of Aqaba and in late antiquity served as a military post on the Roman frontier in Arabia. Its name, 'at Diana's', and the temple probably recall an older sanctuary. Scholars have linked it with a small fort at Yotvata in the southern Negev, but that fort lies twenty-six miles from Aila, and its inscriptions call it Costia or Osia.
