Ad Dianam

Sv. Juraj in Split

Listen to the story

At the western tip of the Marjan peninsula in Split, Croatia, a cliff drops to the sea, and there stood the temple that gave Ad Dianam its name, a small road station 'at Diana's', named after the goddess of the hunt. The map marks it with a little temple, and the sanctuary, probably older than Roman rule, was once visible far and wide from the sea. The church of Sveti Juraj on the cliff is generally thought to have grown out of it, and fittingly Saint George, like Diana, watches over hunters, though the only find so far is a possible fragment of an altar screen.
