Ad Dianam

S. Angelo in Formis

Listen to the story

In the sanctuary behind Addiana, 'at Diana's', the goddess of wild animals, the Greek travel writer Pausanias saw the skull of an elephant from Hannibal's campaign. The shrine of Diana of Tifata stood at the foot of the mountain near Capua, and its scant remains lie beneath the church of Sant'Angelo in Formis. The map draws a small house, the sign of a place of worship, and ties it to the mountain and to a temple of Jupiter. Visitors were also shown a cup said to be Nestor's, and after his victory here in 83 BC, Sulla gave the goddess land rich in healing springs.
