Iovis Urius

Anadolu Kavak

Listen to the story

Where the Bosporus opens into the Black Sea stood the sanctuary behind Iovis Urius, Jupiter who sends a fair wind, a Latin rendering of the Greek Zeus Ourios. It lay at Anadolu Kavağı in Turkey, and Yoros Castle on the headland above still echoes its old name, Hieron, the sanctuary. Legend credited the Argonauts with founding it, and a beacon beside it guided ships, still mentioned in 1389. Every headland along the strait had a shrine, yet only this one gets a temple on the map. Its twenty-five miles to the next station are far too many.
