Temple
Templum Augusti
Listen to the story
Templum Augusti, the temple of Augustus, stands on the map in southern India, a small house-shaped building apparently near the port of Muziris, far outside the empire. It has a counterpart, a similar shrine of the emperor's cult at Vologesias in Mesopotamia. Both point to traders, soldiers and craftsmen from the Mediterranean living there, and local rulers let such foreigners settle and keep their own customs. Scholars disagree about who honoured the emperor here: friends of Rome beyond its borders, or the hundreds of Roman subjects who spent months waiting for the winds to sail home.
