Listen to the story
Nudionnum is usually explained as a garbled form of Noviodunum, the chief town of the Aulerci Diablintes, a Gallic people in the province of Gallia Lugdunensis. The geographer Ptolemy knew it by that older name. Most place it at Jublains in the French Mayenne, though it has also been identified with Sées. The town grew around a pre-Roman sanctuary that was later rebuilt as a temple, and an inscription dates its theatre to between AD 81 and 83. Its most puzzling ruin is a small fortified roadside building from the early third century, perhaps a storehouse. The map omits the distance to the next station; about twenty-seven Roman miles seem to be missing.
