Ovilia
Wels am Traunfluß
Ovilia is the Roman town beneath Wels on the River Traun in Upper Austria, marked on the map by the usual pair of towers. Celts had already settled this road junction with its river crossing. Under Hadrian it became a municipium, a self-governing town, and under Caracalla a colony named Aurelia Antoniniana; whether it also served as civil capital of the province is disputed. On the map, oddly, neither a distance nor a connecting line leads from the preceding station. Its walls outlasted Rome, sheltering new settlements, and in 776 a fortified castrum Ueles stood here.
