Paphos

Listen to the story

Paphos on Cyprus was really New Paphos, as the geographer Ptolemy called it, the harbour city of Roman times, while the older town of the same name lay some way inland in a broad, fertile plain. An inscription found there gives the city its proud official titles: August, Claudian and Flavian Paphos, sacred metropolis of the cities of Cyprus. Aphrodite was worshipped here as the Paphian goddess. The road runs eleven Roman miles to Old Paphos, and the onward stretch towards Soli is oddly drawn as two separate sections.
