Parentio

Poreč

Listen to the story

Parentio is the Roman town of Parentium, now Poreč on the west coast of Istria in Croatia. A harbour and busy trading place, it became a Roman colony under the emperor Tiberius, and its forum, open to the sea, held temples of Mars and of Neptune. The map's Istrian coast has slipped by one station: the town stands where Pola belongs, while Tergeste has moved into its place. The distance to Pola reads thirty Roman miles, yet a faded fourth numeral may hide beneath the road line, making forty, close to the true distance.
