City
Pataras
Gelemiş
Listen to the story
Pataras lost a syllable on the map: the name was first written Patras, and another hand later added the missing a in pale ink. That short form appears nowhere else, perhaps because the name was confused with Patrae in Greece. The city is Patara in Lycia, near Gelemiş in Turkey. Its oracle of Apollo, the Roman geographer Mela wrote, once rivalled Delphi. Under the emperors it was a flourishing port and the seat of the Roman governor. The apostle Paul stopped here, and in the third century Saint Nicholas was born here.
