Osa Colonia
Tripoli
Listen to the story
Osa Colonia, the Roman colony that lives on as Tripoli in Libya, is marked on the map with the usual pair of towers. It was probably a Phoenician foundation, later enlarged by settlers from Africa and Sicily. The town became a colony no earlier than the 160s AD, when its people still spoke Punic, and its splendid triumphal arch of the emperors Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus survives today. From here the map draws two roads to Sabratha, and on one of them a figure of eighteen miles is probably a slip for twenty-eight.
