Olympia

Archaia Olympia · Αρχαία Ολυμπία

Listen to the story

Olympia, the sanctuary of Zeus, king of the gods, where the Olympic Games were held, lies at today's Archaia Olympia in Greece. The map goes astray here. It sets Olympia on the coast at the south-western tip of a badly squashed Peloponnese, and runs a river past it whose name is a garbled Eurotas, although the real site lay where the Kladeos flows into the Alpheios. Despite its famous cult, the shrine gets no temple symbol. With caution, this may point to a time after pagan worship was banned in 394 AD and Phidias's statue of Zeus was taken to Constantinople.
