Nicea
Capari?
Listen to the story
Nicea, a town on the Via Egnatia, is probably the same place that other ancient road books call Castra, meaning 'the camp'. A Roman register of routes and a pilgrim's route from Bordeaux both list a station of that name near Heraclea. Older research saw two stations on parallel roads; today most scholars see a single place. If that is right, it was probably the oldest Roman military camp in Macedonia. In the fifth and sixth centuries it rose to a town with a bishop, and a basilica with a mosaic floor has been found nearby. The exact site is uncertain: perhaps Capari in North Macedonia, or the fortress ruins near Dolenci.
