Eribulo

? nördl. von Hisareyn bzw. nö. von İhsaniye ?

Listen to the story

Eribulo was the harbour facing Nicomedia, modern İzmit, across the gulf in Bithynia, and the map sets it exactly there, marked by a small drawing of a hall-like building. The town probably stood on a hill near İhsaniye in Turkey, where the remains of a presumed fortification have crumbled beyond recognition. In AD 218 the emperor Macrinus, defeated by Elagabalus, fled overland to this harbour and took ship for Chalcedon, where he was captured. A pilgrim's route from Bordeaux lists it as a mutatio, a place to change horses, yet the copyist forgot to draw the road line from Nicomedia.
