Listen to the story
Cavtat, a small town on the Croatian coast near Dubrovnik, stands on the site of Epitaurum, a Roman city with two harbours on a peninsula in the province of Dalmatia. The spelling with a t instead of the classical d is first recorded in AD 71, on a soldier's discharge certificate. In the civil war the town held out for Caesar against a siege by Pompey's forces, and probably became a Roman colony under him. It later had two shrines of Mithras and, by 533, a bishop. Around 600 its people fled from invading Slavs and Avars to Ragusium, the later Dubrovnik.
