Listen to the story
Emona, the Roman colony that lies beneath Ljubljana in Slovenia, is drawn on the map with a pair of towers. Founded as Colonia Iulia, it was laid out as a neat rectangle around its two main streets and enclosed by a wall with four gates and twenty-six towers. The town sat on a frontier nobody could quite fix: the Roman writer Pliny counted it to Pannonia, the geographer Ptolemy placed it between Pannonia and Italy, and the Tabula puts it on the Italian side. In AD 238 it was burned as the emperor Maximinus advanced, and afterwards rebuilt.
