Ecbatanis Partiorum

Hamadan

Listen to the story

Ecbatanis Partiorum, Ecbatana of the Parthians, was the ancient capital of Media and a summer residence of the Persian and later Parthian kings; its ruins lie largely beneath Hamadan in Iran. The Parthian label suggests that this part of the map was revised when the city flourished again under their rule. Yet the map seems to set it on the coast, as the crossroads of several long routes, three of them running to the eastern ocean. It is misplaced, probably through a copyist's confusion with Hekatompylos. Some scholars think the coastal city is really Susa, the Persian winter residence otherwise missing from the map.
