Durostero

Silistra · Силистра

Listen to the story

Durostorum was one of the chief fortresses on the lower Danube, and for centuries the base of the Eleventh Legion Claudia; the town is Silistra in Bulgaria. Beside the camp grew a civilian settlement called Aelia after the emperor, a naming without parallel elsewhere. The town was also a customs post, and here a road branched off the Danube highway towards Marcianopolis. Under Diocletian it became capital of the province of Scythia, and around 390 it was the birthplace of the late Roman general Aëtius. In local speech the old name lived on as Drostioru.
