Listen to the story
Draconis, a road station in the mountains of Asia Minor somewhere west of Satala, is called Ad Dracones, 'at the dragons', in a Roman register of routes, which places it on the road from Nicopolis to Satala. The map seems to have the order wrong, for the station really lay west of its neighbour Cunissa. Its site is disputed. Some look to the rock tombs at Demiyurt, others to a wide, fertile stretch of the Lycus valley where the road from Melitene joined, just as the Tabula draws it, and a Roman fort at Melikşerif is another candidate. The geographer Ptolemy's mountain town Dagona in Lesser Armenia may be the same place.
