Divo Durimedio Matricorum
Metz
Listen to the story
Divo Durimedio Matricorum is a copyist's muddle: the words were cut in the wrong places, and they should read Divoduro Mediomatricorum, Divodurum of the Mediomatrici, the chief town of that Gallic people and today Metz in France. It stood on a ridge between the Moselle and the Seille, where the long roads from Lyon to Trier and from Reims to Strasbourg crossed, and those two roads became the axes of its Roman street grid. In late antiquity the town took the people's name, or Mettis, the origin of Metz, before it fell to Attila in 451.
