City
Cyropolis
Rasht
Listen to the story
Cyropolis is a name the map itself never gives: the copyist drew a town symbol here but left it without any label, and scholars have supplied the name, perhaps with the neighbouring name Philado belonging to this spot instead. The geographer Ptolemy lists Cyropolis as an important city in the land of the Gelae, today Gilan on the Caspian coast, and it is placed near Rasht in Iran, at the mouth of the river Cyrus, where Ptolemy's city surely belonged. Nine Roman miles, about thirteen kilometres, separate it from Lezela.
