City
Cyzico
Belkiz Kale · Balkız im Osten von Erdek
Listen to the story
Cyzicus was founded by settlers from Miletus around the middle of the seventh century BC, though legend held that its namesake founder had been slain by the Argonauts. Its remains lie at Belkiz Kale near Erdek in Turkey. The Greek geographer Strabo counted it among the foremost cities of Asia in size and beauty, and its wealth came from a double harbour on the Sea of Marmara. It withstood the great siege by King Mithridates in 73 BC. Yet the map pushes this coastal city inland, probably because the draughtsman misjudged the space and ran into Pylae, which was already drawn there.
