Dartoritum
Vannes
Listen to the story
Dartoritum was the chief town of the Veneti, the seafaring people Julius Caesar fought in 56 BC, and it is Vannes on the Gulf of Morbihan in Brittany. Under the empire it grew prosperous, but in the troubled third century it was given a ring of walls that, as the remains show, enclosed only part of the town. A milestone found at Saint-Christophe near Elven counts eleven leagues from here along the road towards Rennes. On the map the distance figure sits right after the name, probably because the mapmaker feared there would be no room for it on the road line.
