Listen to the story
The Osismii were a Celtic people living on the western tip of Brittany, roughly today's Finistère in France. The map, however, sets them far from home, beside Gesoriacum, modern Boulogne-sur-Mer, apparently confusing it with Gesocribate, a similar-sounding town in their own Breton lands. The Greek geographer Strabo records them first, citing the older scholar Eratosthenes. In 58 BC Caesar's cavalry commander Crassus subdued them, and two years later they joined a revolt against Rome. In late antiquity their chief town, Vorgium, now Carhaix, took their name.
