Nigize Getuli
Listen to the story
The Nigize Getuli, marked in plain black letters in the Cyrenaica section of the map, were a little-known branch of the Gaetuli, the peoples of the North African interior. The Tabula places them south of the mountain where the river Lethon rises before flowing into Lake Triton near Berenike, modern Benghazi in Libya. Their name has been compared with the Nigritae mentioned by Mela, Pliny and Ptolemy, and more closely with Ptolemy's Nigitimi, neighbours of the Lotus-eaters by the Lesser Syrtis. If that match holds, the copyist or his source may have shifted the tribe eastwards to the Greater Syrtis, a confusion suspected for another Gaetulian tribe too.
