Nitiobroges

Listen to the story

The Nitiobroges were a Gallic people of the middle Garonne, whose chief town Aginnum is modern Agen in south-western France. Caesar records that their king Teutomatos led six thousand armed men to join Vercingetorix. On the map, though, the name has strayed far from home, placed between the Loire and the Meuse near Reims. The lettering holds a second puzzle: the copyist stopped short of the final syllable and closed the word with a dot. The ending was added later by another hand in paler ink and different letter forms, perhaps as late as the sixteenth century, and hyperspectral imaging shows it clearly.
