People
Parisi
Listen to the story
The Parisi were the Gallic people of the middle Seine, whose chief town Lutetia stood on an island in the river and grew into Paris. The map, however, sets their name far from home, between the Meuse and the Rhine near Atuaca, rather than beside Lutetia. Scholars have read this slip as a clue that the names of peoples come from an older layer of the map than the road network. In 53 BC Caesar moved the council of Gaul to Lutetia, and a year later the Parisi joined Vercingetorix. Under Rome, a guild of Parisian boatmen worked the river.
