Parnaci

Listen to the story

Parnaci is entered on the map as the name of a people, placed on the lower course of the river Phasis and written in black rather than the usual red. No tribe of that name is known in the western Caucasus, so it is probably a town mistaken for a people: Pharnakeia, founded by King Pharnakes the First of Pontus and named after him, a name also spelled without the aspirate as Parnaces. Ancient writers usually named Pharnakeia together with Trebizond. Because the mapmaker pushed Trebizond too far along the coast, Pharnakeia seems to have wandered with it to the far shore of the Black Sea.
