Natio Selorum
Listen to the story
Natio Selorum, the people of the Seli, is written across North Africa in an unusual grammatical form. The map normally names peoples in the nominative, but here the tribe stands in the genitive, its last syllable compressed into an abbreviation sign, and nowhere else on the Tabula is the word natio joined to a people in this way. The letters can also be divided differently, as the tribes of the Eleioi. The Seli reappear in two town names, Macomades Selorum and Dicdiga Municipium Selorum, which evidently lay in their territory, and they may be the Elaiones whom the geographer Ptolemy places south of the Great Syrtis.
