Listen to the story
Musulamiorum, meaning 'of the Musulamii', names a Berber people of Numidia whom the Romans counted among the Gaetulians. Their land lay around Madauros, in the borderland of modern Algeria and Tunisia. Rome fought them again and again from the late first century BC, defeated them in AD 6 and met them once more in the long revolt of Tacfarinas. Under Trajan their territory was surveyed and marked with boundary stones; one inscription, carved into a rock face near Madauros, draws the line between the townspeople and the Musulamii. Their entry probably reflects an update of the map in the early imperial period.
