Mediomatrici
Listen to the story
The Mediomatrici were a Gallic people of the province of Belgica, whose chief town, Divodurum, is today's Metz. Their land in Lorraine took in the upper reaches of the Meuse, Moselle and Saar, and in Caesar's day stretched as far as the Rhine. In 52 BC they sent five thousand men to relieve Vercingetorix at Alesia. They were known for salt and iron, and inscriptions tell of cloth-making and even beer brewing. The copyist split the name in two with a dot, yet the map places the people roughly correctly, below their neighbours the Treveri.
