Mesiates

Listen to the story

The Mesiates were an Alpine people known only from the Tabula; no other ancient source names them. The map seems to set them in the wrong spot, near Lake Maggiore, yet scholars agree they were surely the people of the Val Mesocco in Switzerland, the valley of the river Moesa, which joins the Ticino near Bellinzona. A Roman road ran through their valley over the San Bernardino pass to Chur, and a place called Mages, listed in Ravenna, probably lay in their land.
