Musoniorum

Listen to the story
Musoniorum is a Latin genitive, 'of the Musonii', and marks the land of a Moorish people in North Africa, today Algeria. The map sets them near Sétif, towards the Hodna mountains. Ancient writers could not agree where they lived: the Roman writer Pliny and the geographer Ptolemy put them in Numidia, while the historian Ammianus Marcellinus, who names them as allies of the rebel Firmus, places them much further west. Scholars explain the confusion as a tribe that split up in antiquity, and inscriptions honouring Septimius Severus and Caracalla record a branch near Kasserine in Tunisia.
