People
Nantuani
Listen to the story
The Nantuani were a Celtic people of the upper Rhône valley, settled between Lake Geneva and the Rhône Glacier, and their name is explained as 'dwellers of a valley'. The map, however, sets them near the sources of the Po, some way from their real home. Julius Caesar sent a legion into their valley, and the Roman writer Pliny lists them among the Alpine peoples named on the victory monument of Augustus at La Turbie. Under Rome they joined three neighbouring peoples in a league of the Poenine valley, whose name, Vallenses, lives on in the Swiss canton of Valais.
