Cydonia

Cydonia was an important harbour city on Crete, and its name reaches back to Homer, who already knew the Kydonians. It lies beneath modern Khania in Greece. The map's lettering once caused confusion: older copies read it as Gydoria or Gydonia. A closer look shows that the supposed bar of a G is really the slanting stroke of the Y, and the supposed R is an N, its extra curve being nothing more than a ball on the dome of the town drawing just below.
