Cripta Neapolitana
Grotta di Posilipo · Grotta di Pozzuoli
Listen to the story
The Crypta Neapolitana, the Neapolitan tunnel, carried the road from Puteoli to Naples straight through the hill of Posillipo, and survives as the Grotta di Posilipo. The Greek geographer Strabo credits it to the builder Lucius Cocceius Auctus in the time of Augustus. The map gives no name, only a large rounded arch with two openings below, a drawing unlike any other on the Tabula, so scholars wonder whether a copyist added it. The Roman philosopher Seneca complained of its choking dust and of torches that showed not the way, but the darkness itself.
