Cortina

Gortis, Γορτυς

Listen to the story

Cortina is Gortyn on Crete, which became the island's metropolis under Roman rule after Knossos had declined. Inscriptions found there praise it as a most splendid city, and its great ruins lie beside a river between the villages of Agioi Deka and Mitropoli. The map marks it with a pair of towers. The last letter of the name has since faded, though the stop after it survives; the printed editions of 1598 and 1753 still read Cortina, as does a list of places compiled in Ravenna. Roads lead thirty-two Roman miles to Subrita and thirty-three to Knossos.
