Conpito Anagnino
südl. v. Anagni [Pleiades]
Listen to the story
Conpito Anagnino means “the crossroads of Anagnia”, the point below the hill town of Anagni in Lazio where the Via Latina and the Via Labicana joined. The Roman historian Livy records a portent here in 210 BC: birds abandoned their nests in the trees of a grove sacred to Diana. Oddly, the map lets the two roads meet one station earlier, so at this crossroads no roads actually cross, and Anagnia itself is missing. The usual pair of towers overlaps the red road line; scholars disagree whether the copyist forgot the drawing and added it later, or simply painted the road over it.
