Corfinio

Listen to the story

Corfinium, chief town of the Paeligni, drawn on the map with the usual pair of towers, once came close to replacing Rome. In 90 BC the Italian allies rising against Rome made it their federal capital and renamed it Italia, a name confirmed by the coins they struck there, though they soon had to move their seat to Aesernia. Four decades later its strong walls again made it a key stronghold in Caesar's civil war. The remains lie around the lonely church of San Pelino, once the cathedral of the early medieval bishopric that succeeded the town, beside today's Corfinio in the Abruzzo.
