Comana Capadocia
Şar, Tufanbeyli · Adana
Comana in Cappadocia, known to the Hittites as Kummanni, lies at Şar near Tufanbeyli in Turkey, in a deep, narrow valley of the Antitaurus mountains on the river Saros. The town was a wealthy temple state of the goddess Ma, whom the Romans equated with Bellona, goddess of war, and so it was also called Hierapolis, the holy city. The Greek geographer Strabo describes crowds of temple servants and a high priest answerable only to the king. The historian Procopius knew it as golden Comana, named after the golden hair of Orestes, and saw its sanctuaries turned into churches.
