Clipeis
Kelibia · قليبية
Listen to the story
Clipeis takes its name from the Latin word for a shield, just like its Greek name Aspis, because the high, conspicuous headland above the town was said to have a shield's shape. It lies at Kelibia, on Tunisia's Cap Bon peninsula. The Greek geographer Strabo credits Agathocles of Syracuse with founding it, though the town is probably far older. Its small harbour mattered, as ships waited there for fair winds before rounding the difficult promontory of Mercury. Julius Caesar landed near it in 47 BC, it later became a Roman colony, and the map marks it with a pair of towers.
