Cisamos

Kalives, Καλύβες

Listen to the story

Near the village of Kalives on the Cretan coast lies the site of Cisamos, a small harbour town. The Greek geographer Strabo knew it as the port of Aptera, a city on higher ground inland that used the little town as its outlet to the sea. Another Cisamos existed on the island, so this was the second town of that name, and the two are easily confused. The map sets it thirty-two Roman miles, about forty-seven kilometres, from Cydonia, and twenty-four Roman miles, roughly thirty-six kilometres, from Cantano.
