City
Claudiopolis
Bolu
Listen to the story
Claudiopolis, the city of Claudius, took that emperor's name in the first century AD; its older name was Bithynion, and today it is Bolu in Turkey. The map gives it a town symbol, but the name itself was apparently forgotten, and the town is wrongly placed on a misdrawn river Sangarios, the same mistake the Greek writer Pausanias made. Its fame came from Antinous, Hadrian's favourite, who was born here. The emperor favoured the town, renamed it Bithynion Hadriana around AD 130 and founded games in honour of Antinous.
